Josh Townsend is a character from the Big Finish Sarah Jane Smith audio plays. He is a bright man, in his early-to-mid twenties. He's described as tall and roguish, with his hair often pulled back into a pony tail (that Sarah makes fun of on several occasions).

Josh is the son of Sir Donald Wakefield, a billionaire and the scion of the White Chapter, a cult dedicated to protecting the Herald, Sarah Jane Smith, from the Crimson Chapter, an opposing cult that believed the Herald would bring about doomsday.

He and Sarah met when Josh saved her from a bank robber. They became friends, and Josh became fiercely protective of Sarah. Though she found out later that he initially met her because of his role with the White Chapter, Josh swore to Sarah that he was a genuine friend that cared for her deeply. Sarah once called Josh her guardian angel, and it was a role he took very seriously. Seriously enough to kill to protect her.

When Sarah found out that Josh had been lying to her, their relationship became understandably strained. Things seemed to be improving when Josh was pulled out of time and deposited at the end of the universe. There he reunited with Sarah and their friend Nat, and learned that shortly in his own future he would be critically wounded in a gun battle on the spaceship Dauntless

Josh decided to live life to the fullest while he had the opportunity. He revived his relationship with Sarah, and began an affair with a Rose Tyler from another universe. Rose became pregnant, and gave birth to a girl, Mickey, shortly before she disappeared.

Now a single parent, Josh continues to do his best trying to save the universe. It's hard when you're one of a few Just Humans, and doubly hard when you didn't even believe aliens existed until one walked up and grinned in your face. Josh feels antagonistic towards the Doctor, mostly because all the women he loves seem to be in love with the Time Lord. He's hoping his daughter doesn't grow up to travel with one of them.
